CBP Scam Alert

One of our paralegals received a troubling phone call today from someone claiming to be a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer. The caller stated that CBP had intercepted a package addressed to our paralegal containing drugs, money, and documents identifying her. The caller told her that he would transfer the call to a supervisor so they could verify her information. If she had spoken to the supervisor, they likely would have asked for personal information, like social security numbers, dates of birth, or bank account details. Thankfully, our paralegal recognized the call as a scam. She told the caller she would report this fraud to the police and hung up.

This is a scam by people trying to obtain personal information or money.  NEVER give out personal information or payment information over the phone to someone you don’t know, no matter what information they seem to already know about you.

Remember, scammers can make it look like they’re calling from a legitimate phone number. For example, when our paralegal Googled the phone number the scammer called her from, it was the real number for CBP Headquarters. However, the real CBP does not call people at home or on their cell phones. If you get a call like this, hang up!
